Parsons School of Design Street Seats, a sustainably designed temporary social public space located at the northeast corner of 13th Street and 5th Avenue. The parking spots adjacent to The New School’s University Center have been transformed into a welcoming spot for the general community to sit, eat, people-watch, and socialize.
Designed and created by students in Parsons’ School of Constructed Environments (SCE), the seating area is built out of cork, a material that is waterproof, lightweight, sustainable, and non-toxic. SCE was excited to highlight the reusable nature of this material, which will be recycled at the end of this process and reused across the college’s studios.
While this is the fifth iteration of Parsons Street Seats since it began in 2015, the 2022 Street Seats is the first since the onset of the pandemic. Street Seats is proud to return and provide a welcoming space for all our neighbors.
